Lavoie/Louden interchangeable names?

Is anyone familar with the Lavoie name sometimes appearing as the name Louden? If so, please explain. I have reached a brickwall trying to research my great great gransfather listed as Eli Louden and his wife Thursile Dore. Their son Fred came to the US via New Hampshire.
I have been given information that the reason I can't find them is because their name may have previously been Lavoie. I have found a few women who were born as Lavoie and then used the alias Louden. Any info you may have will be most appreciated.

Do you have the dates of birth and death for the folks you mentioned?  When did Fred move to the US?  Do you know where Eli and Thursile lived?

Fred Louden was born in 1872 and moved to New Hampshire in 1890. He died in Lancaster, New Hampshire in 1906. His father is just listed as Eli Louden. His son Fred Joseph (my grandfather was born in Lancaster in 1901.
I have found now about 10 different people that have name listed as "Louden (Lavoie)" or Lavoie (Louden).
I was hoping someone could shed some light on to why these names were used together.
